St. Matthew Offers Help, Hope and Home

October 1, 2024

Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan (CCSEM) recently hosted a beautiful evening of fellowship for donors; partners leading planning and construction, as well as representatives from Ascension, our healthcare partner; and others interested in The Residences at St. Matthew in Detroit. Attendees were excited to learn how they could come together to provide “Help. Hope. Home.” for individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

Guests were invited to sponsor apartments and other key spaces in the Residences after touring the former St. Matthew Catholic School and gymnasium, the latter of which is being renovated as a community space where supportive services and activities will be offered.

Comments from St. Matthew’s pastor of 35 years, Rev. Duane Novelly, CCSEM CEO; Paul Propson, Catholic Charities CEO; and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, demonstrated how faith and commitment have come together to change lives. In early 2025, some of our most vulnerable neighbors will find their new home in the site’s 25 units of permanent supportive housing and 21 units of affordable housing.

Following the reception, many took the opportunity to visit the interior of the beautiful church, known for its dramatic mosaic dome over the sanctuary, which was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places.
