Sister Donna Markham OP, PhD, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, travelled to the U.S. Virgin Islands on Dec. 14 to present a check to Catholic Charities of the U.S. Virgin Islands (CCUSVI), headquartered on St. Thomas. The money was donated by thousands of people in response to CCUSA’s fundraising campaign in support of relief efforts by Catholic Charities agencies impacted by the hurricanes last fall.
About her trip Sister Donna said, “Last week I was able to visit Andrea Shillingford [executive director of CCUSVI] and Bishop Herbert Bevard in the US Virgin Islands and bring additional emergency funds to assist them in recovery efforts on the islands. The situation there, as in Puerto Rico, is quite compelling. It is hard to comprehend the extent of the devastation and hard to imagine how many months/years it will take to recover. We continue to receive funds for disaster relief, now including the fires. As promised to our donors, those dollars are being directed in their entirety to those affected.”
CCUSA and the entire Catholic Charities ministry throughout the United States and U.S. territories are committed to helping all those in need, not only with immediate, emergency aid but also with long-term recovery.
