CCUSA's 2022 Annual Gathering featured Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz. His plenary talk explored his journey as a religious sculptor that has included being called an “artistic soldier” for Pope Francis. “I believe that the perfect sculptures are in this platonic sphere in Heaven, and all I need to do is pray and do a lot of hard work and I can pull them down,” said Schmalz, who created the prototype of a new sculpture for Catholic Charities in two days, with participants looking on as he did so. The small model, that depicts Christ embracing a homeless man, will ultimately be cast in bronze as a life-size piece. ...more
