For Juana*, a teen in Honduras, coming to the United States saved her life. She was threatened with rape and death if her brother did not join the gangs in Honduras. Her brother was harassed and beaten for not complying, so they finally told him they would rape and kill his sister if he did not join.
Juana and her brother fled their home country and came to the United States to find their parents. Since Juana was targeted because of her familial relationship with her brother, she applied for asylum. Taking into account the mistreatment, objectification and killing of women in her home country, Juana was granted asylum in November of 2016. [*Name changed to protect privacy.]
