Twin Cities Social Worker to Receive National Children’s Social Services Award

Mary Ann Sullivan to be recognized for pioneering efforts to strengthen families and support children

Alexandria, Virginia (October 4, 2014) – Catholic Charities USA, with member agencies providing innovative anti-poverty services in local communities from Guam to Maine, will recognize Mary Ann Sullivan, a long-time social service worker in Minnesota’s Twin Cities, with a national award for her contributions to children’s social services.

Since 1975, Mary Ann Sullivan has served Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis in positions ranging from volunteer to case manager to vice president of client services to her current role of helping lead migration and refugee services. She helped lead a strategic assessment of the organization’s priorities and has been on the cutting-edge of ensuring quality human services for families in need.

“Throughout her career, Mary Ann has worked to strengthen families and build a better future for children in need,” said Father Larry Snyder, president of Catholic Charities USA and former executive director of Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minnesota. “Her leadership and example have helped her agency to provide shelter to those who lacked a home, assist at-risk youth in achieving their full potential, give safety and security to immigrants seeking refuge, help young mothers who lacked prenatal care, and advocate for dignified shelter and housing options for those in need.”

Sullivan helped lead and oversee a consolidation and strategic positioning of the services that Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis offers children and families. Her tireless efforts resulted in the development of valued principles that continue to guide the organization’s work with children in need, their families, and the communities that support them.

She will receive the Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Award, named for a former bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn-Queens and long-time leader in the Catholic Charities network, at CCUSA’s Annual Gathering in Charlotte, N.C., tomorrow night.
