Healthcare and Food

If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,' but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? James 2:15-16

Why We Do It

Catholic Charities believes that access to equitable and affordable health care and nutrition is a basic human right. We are committed to seeking the integral human development of each person, which includes a person’s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.

  • 41 million Americans struggle with hunger, a number nearly equal to the 40.6 million officially living in poverty.
  • In the United States, 1 in 6 children may not know where they will get their next meal.
  • In 2016, SNAP lifted 3.6 million people out of poverty, school lunches lifted 1.4 million out of poverty, and WIC lifted 300,000 out of poverty.

“The development we speak of here cannot be restricted to economic growth alone. To be authentic, it must be well rounded; it must foster the development of each [person] and of the whole [person].''”
