Disaster Operations

"Have mercy on me, God, have mercy on me. In you I seek refuge. In the shadow of your wings I seek refuge till harm pass by." Psalm 57:2

Our Efforts

CCUSA provides training in disaster preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation. In particular, agencies anticipate and respond to the elevated risks and challenges of vulnerable populations impacted by disasters. With a national reach through a local presence, Catholic Charities helps people through both the immediate and the long-term process of recovery and restoration.

Our Approach

CCUSA is the official domestic relief agency of the U.S. Catholic Church. Catholic Charities supports disaster response and recovery efforts including direct assistance, home repair, home rebuilding, health care services and other programs. Catholic Charities uses case management that enables long-term disaster recovery.

  1. We provide immediate relief when disasters occur: cash assistance, food, water, personal care supplies, cleaning materials and other needed items.

  2. We assess the needs of disaster survivors and then work with them over the long term to meet their needs.

  3. We work to provide relief with the help of many partners, including American Red Cross, AmeriCares, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation, Feed the Children, Latter-Day Saint Charities and National VOAD.

  4. We coordinate with government agencies on the local, county, state and federal levels to ensure a successful response to each disaster event.

  5. We prepare for disasters through extensive training, planning and capacity building.

  6. Give help and hope to disaster survivors.

Approach to Advocacy

Catholic Charities USA advocates for programs and policies specifically associated with mitigating the impact of disasters, especially for the poor and vulnerable. In particular, we advocate for sufficient government funding in the wake of major disasters that recognizes the long-term process of recovery and invests in resiliency.

The Impact

Over the last 10 years, the Catholic Charities ministry has helped more than 6.5 million people affected by all kinds of disasters: floods, hurricanes, mudslides, tornadoes, ice storms, droughts, wildfires, explosions, violence, and environmental damage. In 2015, thanks to the generosity of its supporters, CCUSA provided grants to support disaster relief and recovery efforts in 24 states. 138,290 individuals were served by Catholic Charities disaster operations efforts in the following key areas:

  • 109K Daily Living Needs Met

  • 17,771 Persons Received Healthcare

  • 7,038 Persons Received Home Repair
