Assisting with Adoption

Our belief in the sanctity of human life compels us to support women facing an unintended pregnancy as they make the difficult decision either to parent their child or place their child in an adoptive family. This same belief compels us to find loving homes for children already born who are in need of the healing love of an adoptive family.

The Problem

Many women facing an unplanned pregnancy would like to give life to their child, but feel unable or unprepared to parent. They often do not consider adoption as a way to give their children both a chance to live and a family with the resources to care for them. Further, many children who have special circumstances or who have been neglected desperately need families. Catholic Charities protects life in both circumstances by providing affordable, compassionate adoption services.

Our Approach

Adoption is a process of many steps, requirements and considerations; it can be overwhelming to everyone involved. Committed to facilitating this process in order to protect life, Catholic Charities agencies:

  1. Offer pregnancy counseling to help women consider their options and make a decision about their children's future.

  2. Provide a full range of supportive services to those who choose to parent their child.

  3. Assist women who have chosen adoption to set out their preferences for, and then to find, a loving adoptive family.

  4. Assist birth parents and adoptive parents through the legal process of adoption.

  5. Find receptive families and prepare them to adopt children who have special medical needs and/or who have experienced abuse or neglect.

  6. Work with Catholic Charities USA in maintaining a network-wide registry of children available for adoption.

Approach to Advocacy

Catholic Charities USA advocates for adoption policies that put the best interests and well-being of the child first. In light of recent legislation and court decisions, we are also concerned with protecting the religious liberty of our agencies to continue providing these services in accordance with Catholic teaching.
