Asking, and hearing the answer
In today’s Gospel, Jesus is once again tested by the “chief priests and the elders.” They asked him: “By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?”
They were not interested in Jesus’ answer. They were trying to set a trap so they could accuse Him, only to find themselves put on the spot.
How often do we play the same game with God? We ask, but do not want to hear what He tells us, because His answer may be different from what we want. Throughout Scripture we see Jesus performing many miracles, but always after He was asked and people showed faith in Him.
I have to admit that many times I behave like one of the elders: I ask God, but don’t want to hear his answer, because it demands faith and trust in Him. Over and over again I have been proven wrong, but my weakness and pride won’t let me admit it.
Yet because God is patient and loving, He continues to show me His grace and His truth. I’ve learned that all the social work we are so proud of means nothing if Christ is not leading the way. It is not our leadership that counts, it is HIS. Everything belongs to Him, and it’s only when we realize this that miracles truly happen. All glory and honor is His.
