CCUSA concerned by reimplementation of “Remain in Mexico” program
Alexandria, Va. — Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) is disappointed and concerned by the U.S. government’s reimplementation of the Migration Protection Protocols (MPP), commonly known as the “Remain in Mexico” program. CCUSA urges the administration to continue to take steps to end this policy so that people fleeing life-threatening conditions in their home countries may find aid and safety in the U.S.
Sister Donna Markham OP, PhD, President and CEO of CCUSA said, “CCUSA affirms the inherent dignity bestowed by God on every human person, including immigrants and refugees, no matter the circumstances that compel a person to begin a new life in one of the communities it serves. Although the administration is responding to a court-ordered reimplementation of the program, we, nonetheless, reiterate our call to end this policy.”
As a witness to the Church’s commitment “to welcome the stranger” among us, Catholic Charities agencies throughout the United States provide multiple ministries and services to newcomers through humanitarian relief, pastoral care and legal services.
CCUSA also advocates for policies that protect family unity and allow newcomers an opportunity to contribute and participate more fully in our communities.
