Alexandria, Va. — Sister Donna Markham OP, PhD, president and CEO of CCUSA, in collaboration with Sister Carol Zinn SSJ, executive director of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), invited LCWR members to join Catholic Charities agencies in welcoming asylum seekers entering the country at the southern border.

The sisters responded immediately and generously with prayer, financial support and direct service. “The congregations of women religious have been extraordinarily generous in their outpouring of support and making it possible for sisters who are vaccinated to assist the migrants,” Sister Donna said. “Just as the disciples dropped everything to respond immediately to Jesus’ call, the sisters changed their plans and lives to welcome and assist those people newly-arrived in the U.S. who needed help and compassion on their journeys. Catholic Charities is enormously grateful for their assistance.”

The following video features some of the women religious speaking about their experience.

Also, be on the lookout for the next issue of Charities USA online magazine, which will have articles from the Catholic Charities agencies at which the sisters volunteered, as well as an article about “The Border is Everywhere” initiative.
