Alexandria, Va. – Sister Donna Markham, OP, PhD, President and CEO of Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) responded to the President’s announcement to suspend negotiations for a new Covid-19 relief bill:
“Today the President suspended negotiations for a new COVID-19 relief bill choosing to wait until after the elections for any new funding and assistance. This heartless decision is incomprehensible. People who are suffering cannot wait that long for food and rent.
“We ask for an urgent reconsideration of this action today.
“Our nation is experiencing a profound crisis with over 210,000 lives lost, 30 million Americans relying on unemployment assistance, and communities continuing to fight COVID-19 surges.
“Catholic Charities agencies work tirelessly with families impacted by the death of their loved ones, moms and dads losing their jobs, and millions of men, women and children facing hunger and homelessness. The gospel compels us to care for those who are in need of help, but charitable organizations are not able to shoulder the enormity of these needs alone.
“The administration and Congress must renew their negotiations and pass legislation as soon as possible.”
