CCUSA responds to DHS proposed rule on immigrants and public benefits
Alexandria, Va. (Sept. 24, 2018) — Sister Donna Markham OP, PhD, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), expressed her deep disappointment with the Department of Homeland Security’s Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on immigrants and public benefits, stating:
“While we look forward to reviewing the proposed rule and commenting on it in the regulatory process, our initial review indicates the rule is another attack on migrants whose only ‘mistake’ is losing a job or their economic support. Over the past year a half we have seen the status of Dreamer youth put in jeopardy. We have witnessed babies separated from their parents at the border. Now we watch legal migrants who followed the rules face possible deportation or non-renewal of their green card merely because they or their sponsor, often an American citizen, lost their job or are working class.
“We look forward to commenting on the rule to ensure that our nation continues to be a place that supports family unity, economic opportunity and remains generous when families face unexpected challenges.”
