CCUSA helps ensure effectiveness of Emergency Food and Shelter Program

As a member of the National Board for the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP), Catholic Charities USA helps ensure the program’s effective use of funds in communities across the United States. This week, Ron Jackson, Sr. Director of Government Affairs and CCUSA’s National Board representative, traveled with fellow Board members to visit local programs delivering funds in Phoenix, AZ. These sites included several run by Catholic Charities Community Services, including their innovative Refuge Cafe, which hosts vocational training, sells products made by refugees, and contributes its profits back to local charities.

Catholic Charities USA believes EFSP employs a model structure by empowering local boards controlled by nonprofit social services agencies to decide where funds are most effective to address the needs of their community. This local flexibility reflects subsidiarity, one of the core principles in Catholic Social Teaching that guides our policy work. Read the full letter here.
