Welcome to our blog. I say “our” because I want this to be a place where we can “think and act anew” about the age-old problem of poverty in America. I want us to create a plan for rebuilding an America that provides the opportunity for a full and meaningful life for all.
Last September when the economic crisis was at its height we produced this video, Faces of the Poor, for the Catholic Charities annual meeting to emphasize the effects of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We’ve heard the numbers – eight million jobs lost, 15 million people unemployed. But are we seeing the faces behind those numbers? Do we know their stories? Do we know what to do to make sure this never happens again?
The economy is beginning to turn around, according to government and news sources. But millions are still left behind, from the poor to the middle class. We live in the richest and smartest country on earth. Isn’t it possible for us to ensure the common good of every American? We need new thinking, and new solutions.
That’s what I want us to explore here together. Watch the video and let me know what you think. Then keep coming back. Each week I’m going to post something here – an idea, an article, a video — to provoke your reaction and your thoughts. Because if we are going to reduce poverty in America we will need to think and act anew.
