President Obama and Pope Francis met for the first time this week as part of the President’s European tour. Declaring it was “Wonderful to be here,” and “it’s a great honor,” the President discussed issues of economic inequality and poverty with Pope Francis, a set of issues on which both share a sense of urgency. At the end of their visit, Pope Francis gave the President the Evangelii Gaudium, “Joy of the Gospel,” a collection that calls for a renewed focus on the situation for those in poverty. Regardless of personal politics, we hope this meeting will serve as an important step in furthering the much needed discussion around the plight of those living in poverty both in America and abroad.
